Now, I look at your list and thing that several of those actors should be in my list as well. That's always the way with lists. Neutral

Ian Holm - Alien is one of my favorite films. (Tt would make it on my list of favorites). What a Face It's the first film I saw him in. Have you seen The Madness of King George?

Have you seen Paul Bettany in Gangster No. 1. What a performance!

The Madness of King George – It’s been a long, long time, since I saw this one on tv. Sadly, I remember hardly anything. I first spottet Ian Holm in “Lord Of The Rings”, where he had a small role. (I would like to have seen more from his character).
I also liked his performance in “From Hell”.

Sadly I havn’t seen Gangster No. 1 yet. But I bet, that Paul Bettany did a great job. He first caught my attention in “Dogville”. I don’t know if you have seen this one.

I haven't seen Dogville yet, but it's on my list.

About Ian McKellen : I saw a documentary about a year ago. The subject of it was this effective 4th grade (ages 9 - 10) school teacher. His students excelled in ererything they did, and so they made a documentary on his success.

He had his students perform Shakespeare every year. (This particular year of focus, they did Hamlet). He pulled all kinds of strings to find the money to take them on field trips, and on one of these trips the kiddos got to meet Ian McKellen. McKellan met with them and discussed his career and acting, and he performed a monologue for them.

When he first met them, and as he was shaking their hands, it was hysterically funny to see these little ten year olds literally scream when he touched a classmate's hand. It was like Beatlemania.

I just wanted to share that with you. It made me think all the more highly of Sir Ian McKellen, to share his time with a group of children. I have no doubt that it touched their lives in a long lasting way.

I didn't know, that Ian McKellen was involved in such things.

I think it's always great, if actors give a little bit of there time for things like that. Laughing

And of course: The school teacher did a great job. Such good teachers are sadly hard to find. Respect

About Dogville: If you haven't seen this movie yet, you should consider renting the movie. Because this film is .. ahm different.
It's hard to say if you like this wired Lars von Trier thing..
but at least the acting is great..

I haven't seen "Dogville" yet either...but I loved "Breaking the Waves" by von Trier...I liked all your picks for fave actors and actresses, especially Jean Reno. I'd throw in Charles Dance, too, for good measure. I've been a fan of his for years and loved him in "Bleak House". And I'd add Christopher Walken, too. In your oldies list, did you put in Cary Grant...? I just re-watched North by Northwest the other night.
It's been a long time since I saw "Madness of King George" , also, but I liked it.
Have any of you seen a very funny movie called "Very Annie Mary" with Rachel Griffiths and Jonathon Pryce?

I didn't mention Grant, but he has been in some great movies - hard to avoid when you have worked so much with Hitchcock.

His Girl Friday, Bringing Up Baby, and Arsenic and Old Lace are some of my favorites.

I mentioned James Cagney.
Richard Widmark, Peter Lorre, and Robert Mitchum should go on the list too.
There's something very similar about these actors and the way the represented characters. I think they were all daring in their acting endevours.

Spencer Tracey had some great moments as well - and Barbara Stanwyck.

And then there's Gregory Peck!
Don't get me started! The list goes on and on...

It's kind of funny - the first time I remember noticing Udo Kier was in My Own Private Idaho. Because of this, the thought of him makes me giggle. The same goes for Charles Dance. When I see him, I always think, "Oh! It's Numpsy!"
I think both of them are fabulous actors. It's just funny how first impressions stick.

I haven't seen Very Annie Mary. I'll look into it.

the problem with udo kier is, that he is sometimes involved in very strange projects..

i have once seen him as the evil character in an german tv-series for children. it was a kind of strange...

You're right!! He does get involved in odd things...there are a couple of actors that are like that, you wonder about their motivation...Speaking of quirky types, Willem Dafoe is good, too.

Udo Kier is an awesome actor! and he looks so strange, honestly though I like him because his style is so different from anything I've ever seen
